Letter: Don’t dismiss solutions like Seven50 initiative out of hand
County Commissioner Bob Solari (Dec. 16, guest column) is a smart and sincere guy. He lays out his case well against participating in the Southeast Florida regional partnership Seven50 initiative. But his opposition is misguided.
There is much to be gained and nothing to lose from participating in Seven50.
Many of the most pressing issues we will face as a county in the next 50 years are multi-jurisdictional. Indian River County shares watersheds with all the other counties in the region. We share air, groundwater, transportation networks, wildlife, ocean resources and so much more. These sorts of issues can only be effectively addressed by something like Seven50, and it would be foolish to deny ourselves a seat at that table because many have a knee-jerk negative reaction to anything that smacks of collectivism.
Seven50 may produce workable solutions to these issues, or it may not. But it has absolutely no legislative or regulatory authority, so we are not ceding any local control. Solutions offered can be adopted if they make sense for Indian River County, rejected if they don’t, or modified as we see fit.
